The other thing that interested Leonardo was painting in oils. The Venetian painters were masters of this skill. The wind and the damp, salty air of the lagoon prevented frescoes from adhering to the walls. Consequently, the artists there preferred wood panels, and soon canvas as well, and they achieved a brilliance in oil painting that had rarely been seen before. Conditions were perfect for this, as in Venice specialist vendecolori—paint dealers—offered pigments, resins, and dyes imported from all over the world. Artists could find ground lapis lazuli for making ultramarine blue, kermes red made from scale insects, and anything else their hearts desired.18

The Venetian painters particularly liked to experiment with flesh tones and went to great trouble to make the skin of their female figures glow as realistically as possible. The Venetians had an especially close relationship with Mary, who was said to have been involved in the founding of the city in AD 421. Images of the Virgin hung in virtually every house, as well as in churches and offices. Sometimes the Virgin was depicted concentrating on her child; at other times she was in the company of saints deep in prayer and angel musicians who had gathered together to worship.19
